I was meeting with a client and in our discussion we got to the issue of property taxes. I had recommended an attorney I had used to fight my property taxes. Apparently she had had a discussion with another business owner who mocked her about her process or using an attorney.
Apparently the way it should be done in Cook County is to make a donation to the assessor’s election fund. Do this and the property taxes on a business property are magically lowered.
Now I have to admit that I am a very cynical person but that seems so slimy and blatant even for Illinois politics, that it has to be a myth or urban legend. But it does seem to have that awful ring of truth to it.
But I am assuming (I know the joke) that something this blatant would be looked at by the feds, the press or minimally the election boards.
It actually would not be too difficult to investigate. The donations are a matter of public record, as well as the property assessment. These can be compared starting with the largest donors.
So I am plagued because I fear looking into this and finding that it is fact and not fiction.
