It is estimated that by 2020, health care will account for nearly one in nine U.S. jobs. This represents a 30% jump in employment between 2010 and 2020. Adding an estimated 4.2 million new jobs.
The majority of these positions will be low-paying positions (CNA’s, home health aides, medical assistants, nursing aides, medical secretaries, personal care aides). It is expected that these will continue to pay around $20,000.
There is also an expected increase in demand for registered nurses, physicians and surgeons. These should pay slightly more.
The projections also call for more than 1.2 million new RNs will be needed to fill new and existing nursing slots. Also most jobs won’t be at hospitals, but in at-home care or at providers’ offices, as the increased focus shifts from acute health care to preventive and outpatient services.
