The airlines have been implementing lower and lower fares; they can be good for consumers. But to recoup those monies, we all need to beware of unexpected fees they are imposing when we travel on a basic economy fare.
These new bare-bones fare, recently rolled out by the major airlines, apparently do not allow carry-on luggage. If you show up at the gate with a bag other than a purse or backpack, you may be charged as much as $50 to check it.
So take a look at the fine print you never read to see what is allowed and what is not.
