Trump is again calling for increased oversight of paid preparers. The IRS is thrilled at the prospect.  The Service has been asking for this ever since an appeals court struck down its regulations requiring unenrolled preparers to pass a competency exam and take tax courses.

Trump wants Congress to give the Service authority to regulate all paid preparers. He’d also give IRS more leeway in correcting errors on filed returns. Fixing more than simple math goofs would come at the cost of delaying refunds.

But this does not address those who buy a tax program and generate 50 returns all claiming to be self-prepared.
