The IRS has set the top penalty for those who go without health coverage this year.

The individual mandate’s tax for being uninsured is typically the higher of two figures: The basic fine or an income-based levy. The basic penalty for 2015 is $325 a person ($162.50 for family members under age 18), with a cap of $975.

The income-based levy is 2% of the excess of a taxpayer’s household income over the minimum level of income that is needed to trigger the filing of a tax return. But the maximum penalty is limited to the cost of a bronze-level exchange plan.

So for 2015, the tax for going uninsured cannot be more than $2,484 per person and $12,420 for a family of five or more.
