Bike prices shot up 10% to 15% last year, as the COVID-19 pandemic helped boost many homebound Americans’ appetite for outdoor recreation. Anything to get out of the house and not into a store to look for toilet paper.

Industry watchers are expecting similar price increases to continue through 2021, with demand staying high and shortages exacerbated by supply chain issues.

Those hoping to buy a bike should first try secondhand retailers, such as craigslist, eBay or the Pro’s Closet, before hitting up sporting goods stores.

More Americans cycling will also increase demand for biking infrastructure, so don’t be surprised if Congress ponies up some money for more trails and bike lanes.  I don’t think bike lanes are part of the infrastructure plan.
