I am currently reading the latest book in the continuation of the Tom Clancy series. In the novel, the Russian President is looking to move $8 Billion dollars out of Russia and into secret accounts and a Bitcoin launderer is being used to obscure the trail from any who would attempt to track the money. So the Ruble is being converted to Bitcoin and then into US Dollars.
Granted this is fiction, but Bitcoin remains the most popular currency on the “Dark Web”.
A recent study at King’s College, London found that websites offered illicit goods and services in 12 categories. Bitcoin was the digital currency of choice for payment for these services.
Money laundering may not have been the idea behind Bitcoin, but now it seems to be the most prevalent use of the digital currency.
