We have all seen the ads and most know them to be false, yet some believe them to be true.

So, H&R Block must pay a fine and change its deceptive marketing practices. In 2024, the Federal Trade Comm. filed an administrative complaint against the firm, alleging that it pressures consumers into overpaying for digital tax preparation products and deceptively markets them as free when many aren’t eligible for the free version.

The complaint said customers wanting to downgrade the level of their digital products faced lots of challenges, in contrast with the seamless process for upgrading services.

H&R Block and the FTC settled the case, with H&R Block agreeing to pay $7 million. The settlement also requires the company to make it easier for its consumers to downgrade products. And H&R Block must disclose the percentage of people that would qualify for free services or say that the majority of filers wouldn’t qualify.

Wonder how much they made before they had to settle, bet you it was over $7 million…
