A few weeks ago the Pew Research Center did an analysis regarding Millennials and where they are living. In 2008 most people figured that the poor economy was the main cause for Millennials to be living with their parents.
Now that the economy has improved somewhat the Millennials are still staying with their parents. According to the report 42 million 18-34 years olds lived independently, today the rate is the same even given that more have graduated college and may have the wherewithal to move out.
I believe that the crushing debt load necessary for securing a college degree is the major cause. I believe that they want financial freedom more than independent living. Now I can easily be wrong, but those I have talked to this is the reason. Also the costs of renting and home ownership rising sharply have not helped. Remember renters are paying the owners mortgage and property taxes.
The ones who have moved out is because they had to move to get a job in their field. Their preference was financial freedom from crushing student loans.
If only colleges and universities could present a product at a cost people are actually able to pay things would be different. But we are also looking at declining enrollment rates.
The future will be an interesting place to see. I just hope I like it when I get there.
