As I grew up I was never included with the Baby Boomers, I was in something called the 13th Generation. But, it started in late high school to early college, which all of a sudden I was thrown in with the Boomers and was told that Sputnik, the Beatles, the Kennedy assassination and Woodstock were my defining moments…
Bullshit, I wasn’t even born during two of them and never cared for Woodstock especially at 4 yrs old. Below is what I consider the correct delineation of the generations.
Generations
• Lost Generation (1883–1900)
• G.I. Generation (1901–1924)
• Silent Generation (1925–1942)
• (Baby) Boom Generation (1943–1960)
• 13th Generation (Gen X) (1961–1981)
• Millennial Generation (Gen Y) (1982–2000)
• New Silent Generation (Gen Z) (2001-)
I grew up with the beginning of the latchkey kids; mom’s forced to go to work to maintain the illusion of a middle class, the increasing divorce rate. I remember my father complaining about the gas crisis of the 70’s, also the hyper inflation of the early 80’s.
When I got out of college there was a wonderful depression (mid to late 80’s), business just started to dump employees creating mistrust of institutions. My peers are pragmatic and practical. We tend to be individualistic and we use technology.
We have been shunted by the Baby Boomers early in our careers and now that we are standing on our own and grow our businesses, we have to deal with the coddled Gen Y and the baggage that they bring with them. The future will be interesting and challenging whether we want it to be or not…
