Cook County Illinois
Having recently lost a property tax appeal, I was commiserating with a client whom had also failed in their appeal well.
They had been informed that the foremost reason was that they were still paying their property tax bill and the county will not be giving up any revenue anytime soon if it can help itself. Also, with all the vacant properties, foreclosures in process and those foreclosures pending not paying property taxes, the county cannot afford to give up additional revenue from those still paying their bills. Every part of government is looking for our money.
It also appears that even though our property is worth less and less the county’s equalizer is utilized to make sure we pay even more in property taxes. Apparently this will continue to get worse and there is not relief is sight.
Remember Cook County has one of the most complicated property tax bills out there, and there is a reason for that: to keep the money following in at any cost.
