I was meeting with one of my clients recently. I always look forward to our meetings. Talking to her gives me a greater perspective of what is going on in other places; since she travels around the country with a focus on DC and the east coast. She comes in with some very interesting concepts and stories, but alas I never get the whole story, I only get them up to a point. The fun of confidentiality. Sometimes I am left with only an inkling of the story’s end. This creates the times that I hate the privacy issue, I like to know the finale…
But this year during our conversation she relayed a quote from an attorney, which struck a real cord. All employees fall into only two categories owner of temp.
Upon reflection it is absolutely true. I have seen people who thought they were indispensable get let go. I was talking to one client who was running a company. She tendered her retirement and was asked to extend. She did this twice. The replacement who came in had no relevant experience and the client was to be kept on for a number of months. Only to be told her services were no longer required abruptly. Apparently the past be damned, only the future counts.
Employees may be loyal; owners may be loyal as well. But at times business decisions need to be made. When those decisions are made, loyalty only goes so far, business is business.
