I prepare the payroll for one of my clients along with my other responsibilities. As I was doing their weekly bank reconciliation I noticed that a bonus check had not been cashed. Now it wasn’t a huge amount, but it was a noticeable amount.
So I contacted the employee and they stated that they just hadn’t gotten around to cashing it. This was startling since I know this person needs the money.
So why would they not cash the check and instead give themselves enough time to lose it? I have heard many stories of people losing checks and finding them in odd places. One was on the street around the corner from their house, having found it the next day after dropping their payroll check.
But if you need the money why would you not cash/deposit the check so you have the funds? I am curious as to the psychology behind this since I cannot fathom it.
