There is always the question in the back of job seekers minds as to what they can do to make themselves standout from the crowd.  Especially if you are a new grad and are looking for that first job, standing out is more difficult.

One suggestion of what not to do is use a quirky e-mail address, or the e-mail address of your current employer.  Based upon what has been shared with me these are not the way to go.  The quirky makes you look less professional.  One of my sons used “cactus2thenutsack”, he thought it hilarious at 15(?).  I thought it stupid and beneath him, he did lose the account shortly after he started looking for a part-time job.

The current employer e-mail is just tacky.  Certain jobs are still very easy to fill, do not get yourself excluded from the completion for a dumb move.

Try to understand who your target audience is, do your research.  The internet is a great tool that was not available 100 years ago when I was looking for my entry level job.  Home computers were a rare novelty as well, laptops and tablets did not exist.  I did say it was 100 years ago.  So use the tools available.

What is your unique selling position?  You are selling a product that you not only have to believe in, but you will be selling it for your entire professional career, yourself.  Know what you can offer that no one else can.

What do you want them to feel?  Decisions are made more often on an emotional basis that on an intellectual basis.  We like to believe otherwise but a majority of our decisions are emotional.  Three candidates all have the same education and work experience.  Who gets chosen?  The one who appealed to us on a positive emotional level, that is the one who gets hired.
