This tax season the IRS continues to be flooded with notifications from victims of tax-related identity theft.  Scammers are using stolen Social Security numbers to get unauthorized refunds, and the victims are finding out there’s a problem only when their tax return filing is rejected.

The service plans to devote more resources to combat this, but the problem is spreading quickly.
The victims of identity theft are providing their perpetrator’s by clicking on e-mails that purport to be from the IRS and then provide personal information.

The Service will never send notices of refunds or audits by e-mail and never asks for data in an e-mail or on social media sites.

To report that you may be a victim of identity theft, call IRS at 800-908-4490.
