We have all heard the expression “time is money”.
Do any of us doubt this expression or disagree with it? All of our jobs are based on what we can do for someone else within a specific time frame for compensation. It does not matter if you are hourly, salaried or an entrepreneur. We only really have our time to sell.
In Time is a dystopian science fiction movie which is an allegory of this point. In the film people are paid with time and not money, it is a mixed movie but the message was interesting if not subtle.
I was reading an article in which a woman had been living a frugal lifestyle to save up enough to buy a home instead of renting. Afterwards she had apparently made the calculations and hired a cleaning woman to clean her home, because she could make more money working from home than it cost to have the cleaning woman do the job.
How many of us are doing those calculations? I know that I have, one of my kids cleaning my office because it is cheaper to have him do it than myself or my staff.
Based on the proposals we have seen in the past from vendors, it is apparently cheaper for us to do the work than hire outsiders. My office is 1,000 sq ft, I am not sure why that should cost $100 a week to clean. We are not that messy, usually…
But, we should all looking at what we can off load either to free time or be more cost effective. Unless you actually like spending the time on the activity; I hate cutting the grass, but I know those who love it. Since I hate it, I pay someone to do that task.
Is there something you should be giving up?
