New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg declaration against Coca-Cola and Pepsi’s jumbo sized drinks in his fight against obesity is unlikely to become a federal strategy. Lawmakers in both parties see Bloomberg’s proposed crackdown as a giant overreach of power.
So the beverage industry does not need worry about Uncle Sam banning jumbo sodas and time soon. But most would not be shocked if an oft-blocked soda tax gets more notice in a year or so as Washington searches for new pockets to pick to raise revenue as part of a deficit-cutting plan (tax and spend philosophy).
