There were over 7,600 ransomware attacks reported to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) between 2005 and March 2016.  The cost of these attacks exceeded $1.6 million.

However the Kasperski Lab believes that the reported ransomware is much smaller than the actual number of attacks occurring.

Worldwide, it is believed that between April 2015 and March 2016 occurred to 2,315,931; an increase of 17.7% from the previous year of 1,967,784 attacks.

While historically over 90% of the attacks were against home users; the corporate attacks rose 487% from 27,000 in 2014-2015 to 158,600 in 2015-2016.

Over that two year period more than $25 million was paid out.  So have you protected your system?  Do you have secure backup files?  Make a plan and follow it.
