In a recent court case, a couple’s e-filing error does not allow them to avoid penalties for late filing and payment, according to a federal district court

When e-filing their return through TurboTax, the husband input a wrong Social Security number. IRS rejected the return that day and notified TurboTax, which then e-mailed the couple to inform them of the rejection.

Surprisingly the couple waited 18 months before checking the e-mail or the status of their return.

They later filed a paper return and paid the tax. The court upheld IRS’s assessment of delinquency penalties, agreeing that the originally submitted, e-filed document was not a completed tax return filing because of the SSN error.
