Individuals can e-file their federal returns at no cost, no matter their income, directly with the IRS.
The Service has two options. If your 2017 adjusted gross income was $66,000 or less, you can prepare and e-file your return with no charge by going to www.irs.gov/freefile then select a tax software vendor.
People with AGIs greater than $66,000 need to use Free File Fillable Forms. This second program does math calculations, it won’t ask a set of questions to determine which forms you need to file. Here you need to know tax law and requirements.
Surprisingly it may be best for people who don’t know taxes and are not comfortable filling out paper returns, hire a professional.
