How much you must earn to be considered middle class, upper-middle class in every US state
Based upon a GOBankingRates analysis, they seemingly have found that the income needed to qualify as middle class varies widely by state.
Who would have guessed that it costs more to live in other states…
The basis of the report comes from based on U.S. Census Bureau report on household income data and the Pew Research Center’s definition of middle class.
I have to admit, I thought Hawaii and California would be higher on the list. The top five are:
- Taxachussets
- New Jersey
- Maryland
- Hawaii
- California
Illinois is defiantly in the top half, actually within the top twenty. Where we fall is number 18.

- Middle-class income range: $55,474 to $166,422
- Upper-middle class income begins: $129,439
