I have been thinking about one the side hustles that I read about and was not overly fond of when I first read about it in an article. The choice was to develop a class to teach online. I still think it may be a stretch for most people, myself included. Though in the past, I have been told by a few that they thought I would make a good teacher, none of these have been my family members.
But then I remembered that I signed up for one of these online courses, it was recommended by Business Insider (they probably wrote it). It was an Entire MBA course for $10 from Udemy. Granted I have a Bachelors, Masters and a CPA; but I was intrigued, and it was only $10, so I splurged.
I did this in early 2017; I have yet to finish the “course”. Once I got into the course, I readily found that the author had all sorts of incorrect information in the first chapter, simple easy stuff, in my belief general business education information. Which lead to a credibility issues in my mind. If the early information was incorrect why go forward. A waste of $10.
I believe my skepticism is warranted especially since this was purportedly written by a “Business School Professor”, but then my kids have been a bit underwhelmed by some of their college professors. I truly think the world of education has changed from when I went to school, besides the advent of electricity and running water.
I have heard a Dean of a business school state that they only want PHD’s to teach in their schools. So no adjunct faculty with real world experience only academics… When I was getting my Bachelors and Masters I had professors who were from both schools of thought academics and real world experience. I think I benefited for this type of education experience.
So armed with the knowledge of how the world of education works today, I really am even more skeptical of college educations, let alone a class written and designed independently as a side hustle.
The merging of the structure of academics with real world experiences is truly the best of both worlds. Most people don’t have those skills, so then who will be buying the course? I know it will not be me.
I know that those who have suggested that I try teaching are probably going to push me to attempt an online course, next.
