We have picked up a couple of new clients that want to deduct their household expenses as business expenses.
They have an office that they rent, but also want to write off their mortgage. They state they work from home. True they may do some work on their business at home, but they meet their clients in the office. The work at home is for their convenience, only. The home expenses are not deductible. They have no dedicated space and the whole home is not exclusively business.
We strongly encourage those who do work from home to use the safe harbor method and not depreciate their homes. It will benefit the clients in the long term.
