As a country we don’t know how to fix anything any more.

The world is more complex, a hundred years ago when I was a kid, tv’s had tubes in them.  Yes, I am that old…

Now when a tv was not working you would unscrew the back off of the tv and look at the tubes, it one looked wonky, you removed it and went to a hardware store that had a tube tester. If the tube needed replacing you went inside and bought one.  If things were really bad like you accidently hit a beer can with a bat doing practice swings in the house, a technician could have to come out.

You can’t do that now, if a board or circuit goes bad, the average person can’t assess of attempt to fix. The individual parts are also usually more than a full replacement.

Nowadays, it costs more for the repair than the new item.  We bought a refrigerator that cost $1,400 and repair would have been $1,000 minimum (phone estimate).  So, I ordered a new one from Costco for $850 with no special features.

Most items made today have computerized parts that no one is able to repair, only replace, are we better for this?
