I personally believe that we have lost one of our Constitutional Rights.
If you speak what is on your mind and if it is at all controversial the villagers will be out to get you with pitchforks and torches. There will be no reasoning with them, they will burn you and your house down figuratively and maybe literally.
Long ago the US Nazi Party scheduled a parade in Skokie. It became a court issue, but the Nazi Part prevailed. They had their march is Skokie. As hateful as what they preach, they are able to have their say, under the Constitution.
Today, if I make a statement that others disagree with, there will be a backlash of protests, vandalism and harassment.
During the first Trump election he was set to speak his nonsense in Chicago. But protestors got unruly and the speech was cancelled. On the news they interviewed a HS/college student who proudly proclaimed that she had exercised her freedom of speech.
I disagree with her; she exercised censorship over someone else’s freedom of speech with the threat of violence.
Whether we like what the other person is saying does not matter so long as they get the chance to speak. That is freedom of speech.
The Nazi’s had their day in Skokie in the late 1970’s, I did not go listen to their hate, but I saw a clip on the news. But that incident led to a great scene in the “Blues Brothers” movie. I love that scene where Jake and Elwood forced the Nazi’s to jump off the bridge. That is freedom of speech as well.
Do you feel you can say what you want, even if it is not PC? I am aware censorship exists everywhere, more so than when I was growing up.
