I read a review of the book George Washington, Entrepreneur.  It was surprising, all that I had read about Washington, and it never really touched on this aspect of his life.

So, I purchased and read the books it was fascinating with what George and Martha did, they created a complete agribusiness empire within the Mount Vernon industrial village. The businesses included the following, but was not limited to:

  1. Fishery
  2. Wheat/Grist Mill/flour
  3. Corn/cornmeal
  4. Distillery
  5. Blacksmith
  6. Selling Mules
  7. Raising horses
  8. Raising dogs (new breeds)
  9. Textiles
  10. Mining iron ore in Kentucky
  11. Land Speculation
  12. Landlord to tenant farmers
  13. Banker with small loans

They had external clients and utilized internal and external workers to conduct their multiple businesses.

This short book gave be a much better glimpse into the mind of George and a glimmer into Martha’s mind, than all of my prior readings.
