He said, “Son, stocks may rise and fall, utilities and transportation systems may collapse. People are no damn good, but they will always need land and they’ll pay through the nose to get it! Remember,” my father said…         …land

-Lex Luthor (Superman 1978)

Land, essentially has stopped being made, granted with water levels rising and falling all over the world more is covered or uncovered, but no one is making any more.

This why McDonald’s owns all of their land.

While the brand has sold more than one billion hamburgers to customers around the world, 85% of its stores are owned by franchisees. Franchisees pay to use McDonald’s brand name, its proprietary processes and trademarked menu items, but unlike other franchises, McDonald’s owns the land the stores are built on.

So, the franchisees will always be paying rent so long as they are in business.  Granted I am not certain that McDonald’s owns the land in Japan, India and China.  But in the USA yes, they do.
