High-income individuals who haven’t or refuse to file returns are also finally getting IRS’s scrutiny. Talk about low hanging fruit.
Revenue officers will conduct in-person visits with individuals who received income in excess of $100,000 but didn’t file returns in 2018 or prior years.
But here is where it gets weird. The officers will work with the taxpayers to help resolve the issue and bring them into compliance (free tax preparation?) by having them file the delinquent returns and pay taxes and penalties.
With either an upfront payment, by making a compromise offer (settling for less than 100% of the liability); or by entering into an installment agreement.
Those who refuse to comply can be subject to levies, liens or even criminal charges. A total of only 800 visits are planned, a mere drop in the bucket in the universe of nonfliers. Will lower income individuals have the same option of a settlement for less than 100%?
