I have a friend of mine who is starting his second career in his mid-50’s. He thought that he was going to spend the last years of his working life at his last employer. But things obviously did not work out as planned.

So he has developed a plan to move on a two track pathway, he has gotten his insurance licenses and is working as an outreach specialist for a local college. This position really fits into his skill set. But as with any major change there will be challenges and obstacles.

As an accounting professional, new and old insurance agents are constantly after me to show them the details of my client list so they can make their fortune. With my business clients I talk to them often during the year, with the individuals I may talk to then two or three times a year. But, I only make referrals to them when they let me know that they are unhappy with whom their current vendors are and I recommend two or three people who I have worked with in the past, because I know that they will take good care of my clients. My friend knows that he will not be on the top of my list for quite a while.

Going the insurance route will not be an easy one.

Working as an Outreach specialist for a local college utilizes my friends skill set much better. Here I have been able to point a couple of clients his way, knowing that they can assist one another.

I myself have started a second business of sorts, when I hung out my own consulting single and moved away from being a wage slave. Statistics point to the fact that most people will have at least two careers or possible more. What is your plan?
