I have to admit that tax software has made it easier for people to prepare their own taxes, but there are still situations where it’s smart to bring in a pro.
Depending on your income, you may be able to prepare and file your taxes at no cost through the government’s FreeFile program.
Though years ago, I had one gentleman from a networking group call me up for help. He was using the IRS’s free online software for filing and had called me to assist him. I explained that I never used the software and my unfamiliarity with it I had no way to assist him. I suggested that he would have to call the IRS, since they provided the software.
The software can only assist you so far, then you have to turn to a preparer. For simple returns the software package can work. But, as your financial life gets more complicated a knowledgeable prepare should be chosen.
Preparers can come in all sorts of sizes and qualifications. CPA’s are required to obtain a minimum of 120 hours of continuing professional education. I usually exceed that amount getting education from multiple sources. I belong to a number of professional organization to get as great a variety as possible of viewpoints on topic that will benefit my clients.
