While some states taxing authorities are urging the IRS to pick up the pace on giving them W-2 data.  Others like Illinois are requiring that the data be entered on the My Tax Illinois website.

Employers are required to file W-2s with the Social Security Administration (SSA) by January 31, the same final date for the forms to go to employees.

SSA then forwards the information to IRS, which then shares it with the states. However, it can sometimes be as late as April before the state authorities receive the W-2 data from the IRS.

They want IRS to act sooner in order to help them detect tax identity theft and refund fraud at the state level.
