William Shakespeare wrote in Henry VI, Part 2, Act IV, Scene 2 “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”. It is among Shakespeare’s most famous lines, as well as one of his most controversial.

Counter to that has been a trend in law school applicants, which surged this year, up 20% versus last year. Scores for the Law School Admission Test, or LSAT, were way up, likely stemming from a shorter, at-home test introduced last spring as the pandemic took hold.

Experts believe that the current political landscape, where more students are concerned about racial inequality as well as the tough job market last year may have prompted more interest in law school.

But the upward trend in applicants may be short-lived. College applications to undergrad programs have been declining, which probably will lead to fewer law students.
