During the Dark Ages, most people’s access to goods and services was confined to a 20-mile radius around their birthplace. Few individuals ventured beyond this limited geographic area over the course of their entire lives.
Even the wealthy, who may not have traveled extensively themselves, were intrigued by the novelty of exotic goods, services, and spices. Their willingness to pay premium prices for these rare items helped sustain and spur trade during this era.
Today, the wealthy often travel extensively themselves. Yet, human nature being what it is, they still covet rare and unusual goods, and remain willing to pay high prices to acquire them.
